Type Studies. The Norstedt Collection of Matrices in the Typefoundry of the Royal Printing Office. A History and Catalogue
Norstedts Tryckeri, Stockhom, Sweden 1983. 198, (1) pages. 4to (31,5 x 21,5 cm). Bound in original red cloth, gold stamped board, gilt spine title, all edges graphite grey. Photo illustrated in colour and b/w, large section with type specimens. Three type specimens, folded twice, from the Danish type founder Johann Gottfried Pöetzsch loosely inserted. Unopened copy. This thesis describes a collection of early typefounding matrices at the Norstedts typefoundry in Stockholm which are a very rare and precious commodity with an important bearing on the study of early letter design in printing. Only a few similar collections have survived down to the present day. The collection contains about 20.000 matrices manufactured by hand for hand-casting between about 1500 and 1850. The matrices, comprising letters, signs and ornaments, are listed in a catalogue containing about 200 items. The collection includes unique roman, italic and Greek typefaces by punchcutters who worked for Christopher Plantin and also provides the first complete documentation of roman, italic Fraktur and Schwabacher typefaces by German punchcutters active in about 1700.

The Barnbrook Bible. The Graphic Design of Jonathan Barnbrook
Rizzoli, New York 2007. 328 pages. 4to (28 x 22 cm). Gold decorated cloth boards, dust jacket. New copy. Known for his revolutionary typefaces, Jonathan Barnbrook (born 1966) is the most sought after contemporary graphic designer working across a broad range of disciplines including graphic design, industrial design, typeface design and film. Possibly best known as a result of his collaboration with major figures in the international art scene such as the Saatchi Gallery and Damien Hirst, Barnbrook has won numerous awards for motion graphics for his commercial film work. His most celebrated collaboration includes art directing Adbusters, the leading activist magazine. He also produces copyright-free work that highlights political and social injustices. Unafraid to express his political viewpoint, Barnbrook has garnered both praise and criticism for releasing subversive typefaces named in a confrontational manner, such as “Manson” (after the serial killer) that highlight the relationship of words to the letterforms that represent them. In this first book by and about him, The Barnbrook Bible features a great deal of never-before-seen work, some of them created specifically for the book.

Surprise Me. Editorial Design
Mark Batty Publisher, New York 2003. 288 pages. 4to (32,5 x 25,5 cm). Printed laminated card covers. Dust jacket. Profusely illustrated in colour and black and white throughout. With indexes of magazines and names. New copy. "Magazines have changed the world," opines art director Horst Moser. To prove his point he combed through his personal collection of more than a million magazines from around the globe to create this dynamic visual analysis of editorial design. Echoing the famous challenge from designer Alexy Brodovich of Harper´s Bazaar to his design team—"Astonish me!"—this book looks at surprising, astonishing, and inspirational examples of virtually every aspect of magazine and editorial design. Moser provides more than 1500 graphic examples with an overview of the conceptual design process. "Horst Moser did what I wish I had done," writes Véronique Vienne in her preface. "He offered his extensive collection of contemporary magazines to readers in the form of a book. Written to appeal to designers as well as non-designers—editors, entrepreneurs, marketers—Surprise Me is not encumbered with insider´s jargon.... His thorough understanding of the process, combined with intriguing juxtapositions of layouts, no-nonsense comments, and original insight make for an entertaining read—as surprisingly fresh as the subject matter he is presenting."
